SSP (or, Shameless Self Promotion by it's full name)

Hello lovely people, and a rather belated Merry Christmas to you all! Hoping everyone is enjoying their holidays!

Just wanted to mention a little feature i'd like to bring to the First Years Blog, called SSP!

SSP (or, Shameless Self Promotion by it's full name) is a nice way of letting your blogging team showcase your work for you, here on this site. This can include your coursework, or any private work you may have been doing in your spare time. We aim to be adding at least one new SSP showcase each month, so get cracking and let one of us know about what you'd like up here!

The first SSP will be displayed in January and to make it a little easier, I will volunteer myself to be the first one, so keep your eyes peeled!

I hope you all have an incredible New Year's bash, and look forward to catching up with you soon!

Happy New Year!

Just plain useful information!

Chewie again.

So this is like suuuuuuuper later in posting this but I got an email from Ian informing us about printing facitlities in the art and design building. This is cool cause we dont have to hike all the way to the LRC to print stuff off. Anyway, all workstations in AB190 can now print to the A4 printer in AB190 called: STCA-AB190-LBW1. So yeah thats cool.

But this post gets cooler.

I havent tried this out yet (cause I run a mac) but Ian also tells me that Faculty Software Central has available free downloads of Microsoft software, for example Windows 7? There should be a link through the Faculty web page on their StudyNet portal otherwise you can use this link:

http://fsc.stca.herts.ac.uk/index.php

I think the key word in that sentence is 'free' and any free stuff is cool stuff so please guys, check it out and give us a shout as to wether its good or not!

Wooden trains from the past!

Hey again.

I was rooting through my picture archives and came across a selection of the model trains we built at the start of the year. I think these were intended to be posted here before but must have slipped the net. Anyway these were the only ones I managed to recover but enjoy.

Sorry that I dont know who made each one, if you are the owner feel free to speak up via the comment box. Hope you're all having a good Christmas and New Year.

Faberge Egg's

Hey guys. The Faberge Egg project has ended finally after 5 weeks of hard work by everyone. We had a quick dash round everyones desk after you all left on friday and took some shots and on first glance there are some really cool eggs there. We're going to save highlighting the cool ones until term restarts so we can really leaf through everyones design work and references.

Regardless, we think what John said at the end of friday was really important. For those of you who think they havent learned much over this project just take a look at the skills acquired on it. Moulding in silicone, casting in resin, vac-forming over chemi-wood plugs, intricate paintwork, sculpting in clay, sculpey and other materials as well as turning reference materials into designs and onto physical pieces. We're sure we missed some skills and many people tried completely new things. Its very easy to overlook this sort of skills acquisition but we'd bet that most of you wouldn't have had a clue about this sort of thing when you first arrived!

Anyway, with it all over, heres the slideshow of everyones work (well, at least the ones who had theirs out on deadline!)

Thanks and Merry Christmas

The blogging team.

Second Year Turbo - Gotham city

Hey guys. Just thought you might want to see what the second year students were working on in the last weeks before Holidays. From what I could gather, they had one week to build a huge silhouette of a building out of black foamcore and grease paper that would sit comfortably in the skyline of the fictitious Gotham city from Batman.

They all looked pretty imposing when lined up together not to mention huge!

John Nolan Films

I was shown this on Friday night by Gerard in the 3rd year, once again thanks mate ;-) I loved the video of the mouse and how it kind of takes you by surprise. Anyway look at this website as its a great source of ideas and inspiration. The companies bread and butter is in animatronics, even if this isn't really your thing take a look as its a great example of what can be achieved. If nothing else its a very good source of inspiration just watching the animatronics show reel gave me shit loads of ideas. I just love the fact they did such a good job of keeping Bubo (clash of the titans) as close to the original as possible.
